The WH-1000XM4s from Sony do not change much in terms of aesthetics or comfort however, their noise cancellation technology is a completely new beast. The company has swapped out the old system-on-chip (SoC) for a new one, which it claims allows it to more accurately listen to and react to ambient audio in real-time, reducing mid- and high-frequency sounds with its Dual Noise Sensor technology.
Two feedforward microphones inside each earcup capture ambient sounds. The sound is processed by the QN1 noise cancellation processor to reduce it quickly without affecting the quality of your audio. The result is an incredibly impressive level of noise neutralization that is able to compete with the best headphones at this price.
There's a sensitivity dial that allows you to adjust the noise cancellation to meet your preferences. For instance, if you, want to listen to the sounds of the city when you're at home, but you might prefer a more closed off listening experience. This feature also uses geo-location to automatically apply the right setting based on where you're headed.
The WH-1000XM4s can be utilized for hands-free calls. They have a whopping 30 hours of battery life along with fast charging capabilities. The WH-1000XM4s come with a robust Bluetooth connection that supports multipoint and NFC support. The quality of the construction of the WHCH720N is decent however, it's not as great as the 1000XM5. The earcups and the headband are made of plastic which is light and comfortable to wear for long periods of time but won't hold up to the rigors of use or even the occasional tumble on hard surfaces. The design is a bit heavy, and the earcups squeak when you move them. The controls are easy to use, with tactile buttons which provide a excellent clicky feedback. A single touch of the power button turns ANC on and off, whereas pressing and holding it prompts you to turn on Sony's Adaptive Audio Control feature. This feature allows you to select a preset audio profile based on how you're using the headphones (e.g., "Staying at Work" or "Running") or the current location (with your phone granted permission to determine this).
The WH-CH720N noise cancelling wireless headphones are one of the most affordable models on the market. It offers excellent ANC for the price, lightweight comfort and up to 35-hour battery life. If you're a frequent commuter these headphones are worth a look.
5. Earfun Air Pro
Earfun's earbuds and headsets are well-known for offering great value, and the Air Pro is no exception. Their frequency response is very consistent, ensuring they sound the same regardless of what you're listening to.
We played Missy Elliott's Get Ur Freak On and the earbuds embraced the song's bassy intro with zeal and energy. Stormzy's Vossi Bop had a similar dynamic sound and the treble was a highlight of the vocals and percussion.
Voice quality is top-notch even in noisy surroundings. The earbuds feature the most recent Qualcomm chip to maintain call clarity, with background noises and clicks minimized even when talking next to the London Underground at rush hour.
The earbuds' Bluetooth connectivity is also very good, with little to no issues during our tests. They connect quickly and with low latency to iOS and Android devices. They are also IPX5 waterproof, which means they're suitable for rainy days and exercise - though you shouldn't submerge them in water. They come with a case that can hold two quarters and a quarter of a charge. This is ideal for travel.
